About the ASME and ASME NEXT Awards
Established in 2018 to celebrate the historic link between literary fiction and magazine journalism, the ASME Award for Fiction honors magazines and websites for overall excellence in the publication of fiction. First presented in 2020, the ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration recognize the unique importance of design, photography and illustration to the practice of magazine journalism both in print and online. The ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30 were organized in 2016 by ASME and its auxiliary organization, ASME NEXT, to support the development of print and digital media by honoring outstanding achievement by early-career journalists.

The ASME Award for Fiction, the ASME Awards for Design, Photography and Illustration and the ASME NEXT Awards are judged every January along with the National Magazine Awards by nearly 300 writers, editors, art directors, photo editors and educators. The award winners are honored at a gala reception in New York City hosted by ASME and attended by 400 journalists and publishers. Fiction and ASME NEXT winners are awarded a medal bearing the likeness of Alexander Calder’s 1942 stabile “Elephant Walking,” the symbol of the National Magazine Awards. Design, Photography and Illustration winners receive awards displaying images of their prize-winning work.
